Composition
- Active ingredients:
- Artemether 80 mg
- Lumefantrine 480 mg
- Drug class: Antimalarial combination therapy (ACT)
Uses / Indications
Used for:
- Treatment of uncomplicated malaria caused by Malaria
- Especially effective against Plasmodium falciparum infections
It is not usually used for severe malaria requiring hospital treatment.
Direction for Use
- Usually taken twice daily for 3 days as prescribed
- Best taken with food or milk, especially fatty food, to improve absorption
- Swallow tablets with water
- Complete the full treatment course even if symptoms improve
- If vomiting occurs shortly after taking a dose, another dose may be needed
Side Effects
Common side effects:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Muscle or joint pain
Serious side effects:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Severe allergic reaction
- Fainting
- Severe skin reactions
Warnings
- May affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation)
- Use cautiously in patients with heart disease
- Avoid use with other medicines that affect heart rhythm unless prescribed
- Not recommended for severe malaria cases without medical supervision
Interactions
May interact with:
- Other antimalarial drugs
- Certain antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin)
- Antifungal medicines
- HIV medications
- Anti-arrhythmics
- Seizure medications
- Grapefruit juice (may alter drug levels)
Cautions / Precautions
Use cautiously in:
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester unless prescribed)
- Liver disease
- Heart rhythm disorders
- Patients with low potassium or magnesium
Important precautions:
- Take with food for best effect
- Seek medical care if symptoms worsen or return after treatment
- Monitor for persistent fever or signs of severe malaria
- Avoid skipping doses to reduce resistance risk
