Composition
FML Neo eye drops contain a combination of an antibiotic + steroid:
- Neomycin sulfate (0.35%) → antibiotic
- Fluorometholone (0.1%) → corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory)
So it works as:
Antibiotic + Anti-inflammatory steroid combo
Use / Indication
Used for eye infections with inflammation, such as:
- Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye)
- Blepharitis (eyelid infection with swelling/redness)
- Eye inflammation where bacteria is suspected or present
- Post-surgery or injury-related eye inflammation (doctor prescribed cases)
It helps:
- Kill bacteria (neomycin)
- Reduce redness, swelling, itching, and irritation (fluorometholone)
Direction of Use
- Usually 1–2 drops in affected eye(s) 2–4 times daily
- In severe cases: may be used more frequently initially, then reduced
- Shake if advised (some formulations may require gentle mixing)
Steps:
- Wash hands
- Pull lower eyelid down
- Instil drop without touching tip to eye
- Close eye for 1–2 minutes
- Avoid rubbing eyes
Side Effects
Common:
- Mild burning or stinging
- Temporary blurred vision
- Eye irritation
Important risks (especially with prolonged use):
- Increased eye pressure (glaucoma risk)
- Cataract formation
- Delayed wound healing
- Worsening of hidden viral or fungal infections
Rare:
- Allergy to neomycin (itching, swelling, redness)
Warning
- Do NOT use if:
- Viral eye infections (e.g., herpes)
- Fungal eye infections
- Allergy to neomycin or components
- Steroid component can:
- Mask infections
- Worsen untreated infections if misused
- Do not use long-term without medical supervision
- Regular eye pressure monitoring may be needed if used for several days or more
Interaction
- Other eye drops → should be spaced 5–10 minutes apart
- Other steroid eye drops → increased risk of side effects
- Other antibiotics → usually safe but only under prescription guidance
Caution
- This is a strong prescription combination eye drop
- Not for self-use without diagnosis
- Do not overuse → risk of resistance + steroid complications
- Avoid contact lenses during infection
- If symptoms worsen or no improvement in a few days, reassessment is needed
- Blurred vision after use is temporary and expected
