Composition

• Mefloquine hydrochloride
  (Commonly available as 250 mg tablets.)

Use / Indication

Used for:

• Prevention of malaria
• Treatment of malaria caused by susceptible parasites

Direction of Use

• Take exactly as prescribed
• Usually taken once weekly for malaria prevention
• Start before traveling to a malaria-risk area and continue after leaving the area as directed
• Take with food and plenty of water
• Swallow whole

Side Effects

Common side effects:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Sleep disturbances

Serious side effects:

• Anxiety
• Depression
• Hallucinations
• Seizures
• Irregular heartbeat
• Severe allergic reactions

Warning

• May cause serious psychiatric or nervous system reactions
• Not suitable for people with certain mental health conditions or seizure disorders
• Use cautiously in heart disease
• Stop and seek medical advice if severe mood or behavior changes occur

Interaction

May interact with:

• Quinine
• Chloroquine
• Antidepressants
• Antipsychotics
• Anti-seizure medications
• Medicines affecting heart rhythm

Caution

• Avoid driving or operating machinery if dizzy or affected mentally
• Inform doctor about history of depression, anxiety, epilepsy, or heart problems
• Use during pregnancy only if prescribed
• Continue mosquito protection measures even while taking the medicine
