Composition

Each tablet contains:

• Atovaquone 250 mg
• Proguanil hydrochloride 100 mg
• Drug class: Antimalarial (blood schizonticide combination)

Uses / Indications

Used for:

• Prevention (prophylaxis) of malaria
• Treatment of uncomplicated malaria, especially due to Plasmodium falciparum
• Travel-related malaria protection in endemic areas

Direction for Use

For prevention:

• Taken once daily
• Start 1–2 days before entering a malaria area
• Continue during stay
• Continue for 7 days after leaving

For treatment:

• Taken once daily for 3 days (adult regimen varies by weight and severity)
• Must be taken with food or milk (improves absorption)

Side Effects

Common:

• Nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Weakness

Less common:

• Dizziness
• Skin rash
• Sleep disturbances

Rare but serious:

• Severe allergic reaction
• Liver enzyme changes

Warnings

• Must be taken with fatty food or milk for effectiveness
• Not suitable for severe malaria (needs hospital treatment)
• Use caution in:
• Severe kidney disease
• Do not skip doses in prevention (reduces protection)

Interactions

May interact with:

• Rifampicin (reduces effectiveness)
• Metoclopramide (reduces absorption)
• Tetracycline antibiotics
• Some anticonvulsants

Cautions

Use carefully in:

• Pregnancy (only if clearly needed and prescribed)
• Breastfeeding (doctor guidance required)
• Patients with kidney impairment
