Use / Indications
Used for steroid-responsive eye inflammation such as:
- Allergic conjunctivitis
- Uveitis
- Iritis
- Keratitis
- Post-operative eye inflammation
- Eye inflammation due to injury, burns, radiation, or foreign body irritation
Mechanism of Action
Dexamethasone suppresses inflammatory responses in the eye, reducing:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Pain
- Itching
- Immune-mediated inflammation
Direction of Use
Typical dosage:
- Mild inflammation:
- 1–2 drops 4–6 times daily
- Severe inflammation:
- May be used hourly initially, then tapered gradually
Instructions:
- Shake well before use
- Wash hands before application
- Avoid touching dropper tip
- Leave at least 5–15 minutes between different eye medications
- Remove contact lenses before use and reinsert after about 15 minutes
Common Side Effects
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Eye irritation
- Blurred vision
- Dry eyes
- Redness
- Increased tearing
- Foreign body sensation
- Eyelid crusting
Serious Side Effects
Especially with prolonged use:
- Increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma)
- Cataract formation
- Optic nerve damage
- Delayed wound healing
- Secondary bacterial, viral, or fungal eye infections
- Corneal thinning or perforation
- Vision changes or halos around lights
Warnings
Do NOT use in:
- Untreated bacterial eye infections
- Viral eye infections (especially herpes simplex)
- Fungal eye infections
- Patients allergic to dexamethasone or corticosteroids
Important warnings:
- Prolonged use may raise eye pressure
- Steroids may mask worsening infection
- Eye pressure monitoring is recommended if used longer than 10 days
Drug Interactions
Use cautiously with:
- Other steroid eye medications
- Immunosuppressive medications
- CYP3A4 inhibitors (may increase steroid effects in susceptible patients)
Cautions
- Temporary blurred vision may impair driving
- Long-term use requires ophthalmic supervision
- Use cautiously in glaucoma patients
- Use cautiously in patients with cataracts or diabetes
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding use only if clearly needed
