Use / Indications
Used for steroid-responsive inflammatory eye conditions such as:
- Allergic conjunctivitis
- Uveitis
- Iritis
- Keratitis
- Corneal inflammation
- Post-operative eye inflammation
- Eye inflammation due to burns, radiation, injury, or foreign bodies
Mechanism of Action
Dexamethasone suppresses inflammatory and immune responses in the eye, reducing:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Pain
- Itching
- Tissue inflammation
Direction of Use
Typical use:
- Apply a small ribbon (about 1 cm) inside the lower eyelid
- Usually 1–4 times daily depending on severity and doctor’s prescription
- Often applied at bedtime because ointment can blur vision temporarily
Instructions:
- Wash hands before use
- Avoid touching tube tip to eye or skin
- Pull lower eyelid gently downward and apply ointment
- Close eye gently for 1–2 minutes after application
- If using eye drops also, apply drops first and ointment last after 5–10 minutes
Common Side Effects
- Temporary blurred vision
- Burning or stinging
- Eye irritation
- Watery eyes
- Sticky sensation
- Eyelid discomfort
- Mild headache or dizziness occasionally reported
Serious Side Effects
Especially with prolonged use:
- Increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma)
- Cataract formation
- Corneal thinning/perforation
- Delayed wound healing
- Secondary bacterial, viral, or fungal eye infections
- Vision changes
Warnings
Do NOT use in:
- Viral eye infections (especially herpes simplex)
- Fungal eye infections
- Untreated bacterial eye infections
- Patients allergic to corticosteroids or dexamethasone
Important warnings:
- Long-term use can raise eye pressure
- Steroids may mask worsening infections
- Monitoring by an eye specialist is recommended if used for more than 10 days
Drug Interactions
Use cautiously with:
- Other steroid eye medications
- Immunosuppressants
- CYP3A4 inhibitors (may increase steroid-related effects in susceptible patients)
Cautions
- Vision may become blurry temporarily after application; avoid driving immediately
- Usually best used at night due to blurred vision
- Use cautiously in glaucoma or cataract patients
- Avoid prolonged unsupervised use
- Contact lenses should generally not be worn during treatment
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: use only if prescribed
