Composition

Each gram contains:

  • Neomycin sulfate (antibiotic – aminoglycoside)
  • Polymyxin B sulfate (antibiotic)
  • Dexamethasone (corticosteroid 0.1%)

Category / Class

  • Ophthalmic combination drug:
    • Antibiotics + Corticosteroid
  • Anti-infective + anti-inflammatory eye ointment

 

Use / Indications

Used for eye conditions where infection risk + inflammation coexist, such as:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis with inflammation
  • Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
  • Keratitis (non-viral causes)
  • Anterior uveitis (in some cases)
  • Post-operative eye inflammation
  • Eye injury with risk of bacterial infection

 

Direction of Use

Typical dosing:

  • Apply a small amount (about 1 cm ribbon) into the lower eyelid (conjunctival sac)
  • Usually 3–4 times daily
  • May be used with eye drops during the day and ointment at night
  • Do not touch tube tip to eye
  • Wash hands before use

 

Side Effects

Common

  • Temporary blurred vision (very common due to ointment base)
  • Mild eye irritation or burning
  • Eye discomfort

Important / Serious

  • Increased intraocular pressure → risk of glaucoma
  • Cataract formation with prolonged use
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Secondary infections (bacterial, fungal, viral)
  • Allergic reaction (especially to neomycin)
  • Masking or worsening of viral eye infections

 

Warnings

Do NOT use in:

  • Viral eye infections (e.g., herpes simplex)
  • Fungal eye infections
  • Tuberculosis or untreated parasitic eye infections
  • Known allergy to neomycin, polymyxin B, or steroids

Important:

  • Steroid may worsen hidden infections
  • Long-term use requires eye pressure monitoring (risk of glaucoma)
  • Can thin the cornea in prolonged use

 

Drug Interactions

  • Minimal systemic interactions (low absorption)
  • Caution with:
    • Other steroid eye drops
    • Other eye antibiotics
    • Drugs that increase infection risk or immune suppression

 

Cautions

  • Short-term use only unless supervised
  • Avoid contact lens use during treatment
  • May blur vision → avoid driving immediately after use
  • Prolonged use increases risk of serious eye complications
  • Stop and seek review if symptoms worsen after 48 hours
