PRODUCT DETAILS

Composition

  • Prednisolone acetate 1% (10 mg/mL)
  • Ophthalmic suspension (white, milky eye drop)
  • Excipients may include:
    • Benzalkonium chloride (preservative)
    • Boric acid
    • Sodium citrate / sodium chloride
    • Purified water

It is a corticosteroid (steroid) eye drop.

Use / Indication

Pred Forte is used to treat eye inflammation (not infection), such as:

  • Uveitis (internal eye inflammation)
  • Allergic eye inflammation (severe cases)
  • Post-eye surgery inflammation
  • Cornea and conjunctiva inflammation

It reduces redness, swelling, pain, and immune reaction in the eye.

Important: It is only for steroid-responsive inflammation, not for routine infections.

Direction of Use

Typical dosing (doctor dependent):

  • Usually 1–2 drops in affected eye(s) 2–4 times daily
  • Severe cases: may start more frequently then taper down

Steps:

  • Shake bottle well (it is a suspension)
  • Wash hands
  • Instil 1 drop into lower eyelid
  • Avoid touching dropper tip
  • Close eye gently for 1–2 minutes

Side Effects

Common:

  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Mild burning or stinging
  • Eye irritation

Important long-term risks:

  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma)
  • Cataract formation (with prolonged use)
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Increased risk of eye infection (because steroid suppresses immunity)

Rare:

  • Allergic reaction
  • Severe eye pain or vision changes

Warning

  • Do NOT use if:
    • Untreated bacterial eye infection
    • Viral infections (e.g. herpes eye infection)
    • Fungal eye infections
  • Prolonged use can cause:
    • Permanent optic nerve damage from high eye pressure
    • Vision loss if not monitored
  • Must be used only under ophthalmologist supervision

Interaction

  • Other eye drops: usually safe but should be spaced 5–10 minutes apart
  • Other steroid eye drops: increased risk of side effects
  • Glaucoma drops: may be prescribed together in monitored patients

Caution

  • This is a strong anti-inflammatory steroid, not an antibiotic
  • It can mask or worsen infections if misused
  • Never stop or continue long-term without doctor advice
  • Shake well before each use (important for correct dosing)
  • Regular eye pressure monitoring is required during treatment
  • Blurred vision after use is common and temporary
