Composition

Each gram contains:

  • Tobramycin 0.3% (3 mg/g)
  • Dexamethasone 0.1% (1 mg/g)

Category / Class

  • Ophthalmic antibiotic + corticosteroid combination
  • Aminoglycoside antibiotic + steroid eye ointment

 

Use / Indications

Used for:

  • Steroid-responsive inflammatory eye conditions with bacterial infection or risk of infection
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis with inflammation
  • Blepharitis
  • Keratitis (non-viral)
  • Chronic anterior uveitis
  • Post-operative eye inflammation
  • Corneal injury from burns, radiation, or foreign bodies

 

Mechanism of Action

  • Tobramycin kills susceptible bacteria causing eye infections.
  • Dexamethasone suppresses inflammation, reducing redness, swelling, itching, and pain.

 

Direction of Use

Typical dosage:

  • Apply approximately a ½-inch ribbon into the conjunctival sac
  • Usually 3–4 times daily or as prescribed

Instructions:

  • Wash hands before use
  • Pull lower eyelid down gently and apply ointment
  • Avoid touching tube tip to eye or skin
  • Close eyes gently for 1–2 minutes after application
  • Vision may blur temporarily after use
  • If also using eye drops, apply drops first and ointment last after 5–10 minutes

 

Common Side Effects

  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Eye irritation or discomfort
  • Eyelid itching/swelling
  • Redness
  • Watery eyes

 

Serious Side Effects

Especially with prolonged use:

  • Increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma)
  • Cataract formation
  • Optic nerve damage
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Secondary fungal, bacterial, or viral infections
  • Corneal thinning or perforation
  • Severe allergic reactions/anaphylaxis

 

Warnings

Do NOT use in:

  • Viral eye infections (especially herpes simplex)
  • Fungal eye infections
  • Mycobacterial eye infections
  • Allergy to aminoglycosides, tobramycin, dexamethasone, or corticosteroids

 

Important warnings:

  • Prolonged steroid use may increase eye pressure and cause glaucoma
  • Steroids may mask worsening infections
  • Long-term use requires ophthalmic monitoring
  • Corneal thinning/perforation risk increases with prolonged use

 

Drug Interactions

Use cautiously with:

  • Other steroid eye medications
  • Other aminoglycoside antibiotics
  • Immunosuppressants
  • CYP3A4 inhibitors (may increase steroid-related effects in susceptible patients)

 

Cautions

  • Temporary blurred vision may impair driving
  • Avoid contact lenses during active infection
  • Avoid prolonged unsupervised use
  • Use cautiously in glaucoma patients
  • Use cautiously in diabetes and dry eye disease
  • Paediatric safety below age 2 years is not established
