Composition

  • Travoprost 0.004% w/v
    (40 micrograms/mL)

Category / Class

  • Ophthalmic anti-glaucoma medication

Use / Indications

Used for:

  • Open-angle glaucoma
  • Ocular hypertension (raised intraocular pressure)
  • Paediatric glaucoma/ocular hypertension in some cases

 

Mechanism of Action

Travoprost increases drainage of aqueous humour (fluid inside the eye), thereby lowering intraocular pressure and reducing risk of optic nerve damage.

 

Direction of Use

Typical dosage:

  • 1 drop into affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening

Instructions:

  • Wash hands before use
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip
  • Remove contact lenses before use and reinsert after 15 minutes
  • If using multiple eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between medications
  • Press the inner corner of the eye for 1–2 minutes after instillation to reduce systemic absorption
  • Do not use more than once daily because effectiveness may decrease

 

Common Side Effects

Eye-related:

  • Eye redness (very common)
  • Eye irritation or itching
  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye discomfort
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Increased tearing

Cosmetic changes:

  • Darkening of iris colour
  • Darkening of eyelid skin
  • Increased eyelash length, thickness, or number

 

Serious Side Effects

Seek medical attention if patient develops:

  • Severe eye pain
  • Vision changes
  • Eye infection signs
  • Severe swelling/redness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Allergic reactions

 

Warnings

Do NOT use in:

  • Allergy to travoprost or ingredients
  • Active serious eye infection unless supervised

Use cautiously in:

  • Patients with prior cataract surgery
  • History of uveitis/iritis
  • Retinal disorders
  • Macular oedema risk patients

 

Drug Interactions

  • Few major systemic interactions expected
  • Maintain at least 5 minutes between different eye drops
  • Avoid simultaneous overuse with other prostaglandin analogues unless prescribed

 

Cautions

  • May temporarily blur vision; avoid driving immediately after use
  • Cosmetic iris colour change may be permanent
  • Eyelash changes may be uneven if only one eye is treated
  • Use cautiously during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Discard bottle about 4 weeks after opening
