Composition
- Chloramphenicol 1% w/w (10 mg/g ointment)
- Ointment base (usually paraffin/mineral oil base)
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that stops bacterial growth in the eye.
Use / Indication
Used for bacterial eye infections, such as:
- Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye)
- Blepharitis (eyelid infection)
- Minor superficial bacterial eye infections
It does NOT treat viral or allergic eye problems.
Direction of Use
- Usually apply a small strip (~1 cm) into the lower eyelid
- 2–4 times daily (or as prescribed)
- Common practice:
- Use eye drops during the day
- Use ointment at night (because it blurs vision)
Steps:
- Wash hands
- Pull lower eyelid down
- Squeeze thin ribbon of ointment inside eyelid
- Close eye for 1–2 minutes
- Avoid touching tube tip to eye
Finish full course even if symptoms improve.
Side Effects
Common:
- Temporary blurred vision (very common)
- Mild burning or stinging
- Eye irritation or redness
- Watery eyes
Less common:
- Itching or mild swelling
- Sensitivity reaction
Rare but serious (very uncommon):
- Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling)
- Blood-related problems (e.g., bone marrow suppression) with prolonged or repeated use
Warning
- For external eye use only
- Do NOT use if:
- Allergy to chloramphenicol
- History of serious blood disorders from this medicine
- Stop and seek care if:
- Eye pain worsens
- Vision changes significantly
- Severe redness or swelling develops
- Not for:
- Viral conjunctivitis
- Fungal infections
Overuse or unnecessary use can lead to antibiotic resistance.
Interaction
- Very few significant interactions (local eye use)
- Caution with:
- Other antibiotic eye drops/ointments (may affect dosing schedule)
- Other eye medications (should be spaced to avoid dilution)
Caution
- Blurred vision after use is normal—avoid driving immediately after applying
- Use only for the prescribed duration (usually 5–7 days)
- Stop after full course unless doctor advises continuation
- In children under 2 years, medical supervision is required
- If no improvement within a few days, reassessment is needed
