Composition

  • Moxifloxacin hydrochloride 0.5% ophthalmic solution
    (equivalent to moxifloxacin 5 mg/mL)

Category / Class

  • Ophthalmic fluoroquinolone antibiotic
  • Anti-infective eye drop

 

Use / Indications

Used for:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Blepharitis
  • Keratitis/corneal ulcer
  • Dacryocystitis
  • Hordeolum (stye)
  • Prevention of infection before or after eye surgery in some cases

 

Mechanism of Action

Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing bacterial replication and leading to bacterial death.

Direction of Use

Typical dosage:

  • 1 drop into affected eye(s) 3 times daily for 7 days

Instructions:

  • Wash hands before use
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip
  • For ophthalmic use only
  • Remove contact lenses during active infection
  • If using multiple eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between products

 

Common Side Effects

Eye-related:

  • Eye irritation or burning
  • Dry eyes
  • Redness
  • Watery eyes
  • Eye discomfort
  • Blurred vision
  • Itching
  • Mild eye pain

Less common:

  • Headache
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Sensitivity to light

 

Serious Side Effects

Seek urgent medical attention if patient develops:

  • Severe allergic reaction/anaphylaxis
  • Swelling of face or throat
  • Severe rash
  • Vision changes
  • Severe eye pain
  • Persistent worsening redness or discharge

 

Warnings

Do NOT use in:

  • Allergy to moxifloxacin
  • Allergy to quinolone/fluoroquinolone antibiotics
  • Untreated fungal or viral eye infections

 

Important warnings:

  • Prolonged use may cause fungal or resistant bacterial overgrowth
  • Stop treatment if severe hypersensitivity reaction occurs
  • Avoid contact lens wear during bacterial conjunctivitis

 

Drug Interactions

  • Significant systemic interactions are uncommon because absorption is low
  • Use cautiously with:
    • Other ophthalmic antibiotics
    • Other quinolone antibiotics
    • Eye medications that may irritate the cornea

Allow spacing between multiple eye medications.

 

Cautions

  • Temporary blurred vision may impair driving
  • Use cautiously in patients with previous fluoroquinolone hypersensitivity
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: use only if prescribed
  • Avoid prolonged unsupervised use
  • Discard bottle according to manufacturer guidance after opening
