Use / Indications
Used for:
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Ocular hypertension (raised pressure inside the eye)
Mechanism of Action
Latanoprost increases drainage (outflow) of aqueous humour from the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure and reducing risk of optic nerve damage and vision loss.
Direction of Use
Typical dosage:
- 1 drop into affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening
Instructions:
- Wash hands before use
- Avoid touching the dropper tip
- Remove contact lenses before use
- Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting contact lenses
- Wait at least 5 minutes between different eye drops
- Do not use more than once daily because excessive use may reduce effectiveness
Common Side Effects
Eye-related:
- Eye redness
- Burning or stinging
- Blurred vision
- Dry eyes
- Itching
- Watery eyes
- Foreign body sensation
- Light sensitivity
Cosmetic changes:
- Increased eyelash growth/thickness
- Darkening of eyelids
- Gradual brown discoloration of iris (may be permanent)
Serious Side Effects
Seek medical attention if patient develops:
- Severe eye pain
- Vision changes
- Eye swelling/infection
- Macular oedema
- Severe allergic reaction
- Persistent redness or discharge
Warnings
Do NOT use in:
- Allergy to latanoprost or benzalkonium chloride
- Certain severe eye infections unless supervised
Use cautiously in:
- Uveitis/iritis
- History of retinal disease
- Macular oedema risk patients
- Recent eye surgery or eye injury
Drug Interactions
Use cautiously with:
- Other prostaglandin analogue eye drops
- Multiple glaucoma medications without spacing
- Eye medications that may irritate the cornea
Allow at least 5 minutes between different ophthalmic products.
Cautions
- Temporary blurred vision may impair driving
- Iris colour changes may be permanent
- Eyelash changes may become uneven if used in one eye only
- Long-term preservative exposure may worsen dry eye symptoms
- Store unopened bottle in refrigerator; opened bottle may usually be kept at room temperature for limited duration according to manufacturer guidance
