Benzoyl peroxide helps reduce acne-causing bacteria and unclogs pores.
Mechanism of Action
Benzoyl peroxide:
- Kills Cutibacterium acnes bacteria
- Helps remove dead skin cells
- Reduces excess oil
- Unclogs blocked pores and prevents new acne lesions from forming
Direction of Use
Typical use:
- Apply a thin layer once daily initially.
- May increase to once or twice daily if tolerated.
Instructions:
- Wash and dry the affected area.
- Apply a thin layer to acne-prone skin.
- Wash hands after application.
- Avoid eyes, lips, nostrils, and mucous membranes.
- Use moisturizer if dryness occurs.

Serious Side Effects
Seek medical attention if:
- Severe skin irritation
- Swelling
- Blistering
- Severe allergic contact dermatitis

Warnings
Do NOT use:
- If allergic to benzoyl peroxide
- On severely damaged or broken skin
- Near the eyes, mouth, or inside the nose
Important warnings:
- May increase sensitivity to sunlight.
- Can bleach hair, clothing, towels, and bedsheets.
- Applying more than recommended will not improve results and may worsen irritation.
Drug Interactions
Use cautiously with:
- Tretinoin creams/gels
- Salicylic acid
- Topical retinoids
- Chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA)
- Alcohol-containing toners
- Other irritating acne treatments
Combining multiple acne products may increase skin irritation.
Cautions
- Start with lower strengths (2.5% or 5%) if you have sensitive skin.
- Use sunscreen daily.
- Introduce treatment gradually.
- If severe irritation occurs, reduce frequency or stop temporarily.
- Moisturizers can help reduce dryness and peeling.
