Composition
- Mupirocin 2% w/w
- Drug class: Topical antibiotic (protein synthesis inhibitor)
Uses / Indications
Used for bacterial skin infections, such as:
- Impetigo (infected sores)
- Infected cuts or wounds
- Boils (furuncles)
- Folliculitis (infected hair follicles)
- Minor infected skin lesions
It works by killing bacteria on the skin and stopping infection spread.
Direction for Use
- For external use only
- Clean and dry affected area first
- Apply a thin layer 2–3 times daily
- Usually used for 5–10 days
- Do not use longer than prescribed
- Wash hands before and after application
Side Effects
Common:
- Mild burning or stinging
- Itching
- Redness
- Rash at application site
Rare but serious:
- Severe allergic skin reaction
- Swelling or widespread rash
- Worsening infection if misused
Warnings
- Do not use in eyes, mouth, or nose (unless specifically prescribed)
- Avoid large open wounds unless directed
- Do not use for fungal or viral infections
- Stop if severe irritation occurs
- Overuse can contribute to antibiotic resistance
Interactions
- Very few significant drug interactions (topical use)
- Avoid mixing with other strong topical antibiotics unless prescribed
- Inform doctor if using other skin treatments on same area
Cautions
Use carefully in:
- People with known allergy to mupirocin
- Extensive burns or large skin areas (may increase absorption)
- Children (use only if prescribed)
