Composition

This is a non-medicated saline (salt water) nasal spray, typically containing:

  • Sodium chloride (NaCl) ~0.65%–0.9% (isotonic saline)
  • Purified/sterile water
  • Possible buffering agents (to maintain pH)
  • Some variants may include mild preservatives depending on brand

Saline sprays contain no active decongestant drugs—only salt water.

Use / Indication

  • Relief of blocked or stuffy nose
  • Common cold and flu symptoms
  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Sinus congestion
  • Dry nasal passages (air conditioning, dust, pollution)
  • Helps thin mucus and flush out irritants like pollen and dust
  • Can be used for daily nasal hygiene and prevention of crusting

Saline works by moisturizing, thinning mucus, and clearing irritants from the nasal passages.

Direction of Use

  • Blow nose gently before use
  • Tilt head slightly forward
  • Insert nozzle into nostril
  • Spray 1–2 times per nostril as needed
  • Use 2–4 times daily or as required
  • Can be used long-term if needed
  • Wipe nozzle after use and keep bottle closed

Side Effects

Usually very safe, but mild effects may include:

  • Slight stinging or burning
  • Sneezing after use
  • Temporary nasal irritation
  • Mild runny nose

Serious side effects are very rare.

Warning

  • Do not share nasal spray with others (infection risk)
  • Do not use if solution becomes cloudy or contaminated
  • Stop use if persistent irritation occurs
  • Use only as directed on label for preserved formulations
  • Seek medical care if congestion persists despite regular use

Interaction

  • No significant drug interactions
  • Safe with:
    • Antihistamines
    • Antibiotics
    • Paracetamol / ibuprofen
    • Decongestant sprays (if prescribed)

Caution

  • Safe for infants, children, adults, and elderly
  • Can be used long-term (unlike medicated decongestant sprays)
  • In post-nasal surgery or chronic sinus disease, use only if advised
  • If nasal blockage is persistent, saline helps symptoms but does not treat underlying infection or structural problems
