Composition
- Menthol (≥99% crystalline menthol)
- Derived from natural sources such as peppermint oil or produced synthetically
It appears as white, waxy, crystalline solid with a strong cooling aroma.
Use / Indication
- Relief of nasal congestion and blocked nose (via inhalation)
- Common cold and flu symptom relief
- Soothing throat irritation
- Used in:
- Steam inhalation
- Vapor rubs and balms (formulated products only)
- Mild relief of headaches (via topical aroma inhalation)
- Cooling effect in muscle rub preparations (when properly diluted)
Direction of Use
- DO NOT ingest directly
- Common safe uses:
- Add a very small amount to hot water for steam inhalation
- Use in diffusers or vapor inhalation setups
- Mix only in properly formulated balms/oils (not directly on skin)
- In steam inhalation:
- 1–2 small crystals in hot water (not boiling aggressively)
- Inhale vapour for 5–10 minutes
- Always keep eyes closed during inhalation
Side Effects
- Eye irritation (if vapours are too strong)
- Nose or throat burning sensation (overuse)
- Headache (from excessive exposure)
- Skin irritation if applied directly (undiluted)
- Nausea or dizziness if over-inhaled in closed space
Warning
- Do NOT swallow (can be toxic in concentrated form)
- Do NOT apply directly to skin or inside nose/eyes
- Keep away from children (risk of accidental ingestion)
- Avoid excessive steam concentration (can irritate airways)
- Not recommended for infants or very young children for direct inhalation
- Avoid in severe asthma unless advised by a doctor
Interaction
- No formal drug interactions
- But caution with:
- Other strong menthol/eucalyptus products (additive irritation)
- Asthma inhalers (may increase airway sensitivity in some users)
- Safe with common cold medicines like:
- Paracetamol
- Antihistamines
- Saline sprays
Caution
- Use in well-ventilated space
- Use only small amounts (very potent substance)
- People with:
- Asthma
- Chronic bronchitis
- COPD
