Composition

  • Mupirocin 2% w/w
  • Drug class: Topical antibiotic (protein synthesis inhibitor)

 

Uses / Indications

Used for bacterial skin infections, such as:

  • Impetigo (infected sores)
  • Infected cuts or wounds
  • Boils (furuncles)
  • Folliculitis (infected hair follicles)
  • Minor infected skin lesions

It works by killing bacteria on the skin and stopping infection spread.


 

Direction for Use

  • For external use only
  • Clean and dry affected area first
  • Apply a thin layer 2–3 times daily
  • Usually used for 5–10 days
  • Do not use longer than prescribed
  • Wash hands before and after application

 

Side Effects

Common:

  • Mild burning or stinging
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Rash at application site

 

Rare but serious:

  • Severe allergic skin reaction
  • Swelling or widespread rash
  • Worsening infection if misused

 

Warnings

  • Do not use in eyes, mouth, or nose (unless specifically prescribed)
  • Avoid large open wounds unless directed
  • Do not use for fungal or viral infections
  • Stop if severe irritation occurs
  • Overuse can contribute to antibiotic resistance

 

Interactions

  • Very few significant drug interactions (topical use)
  • Avoid mixing with other strong topical antibiotics unless prescribed
  • Inform doctor if using other skin treatments on same area

 

Cautions

Use carefully in:

  • People with known allergy to mupirocin
  • Extensive burns or large skin areas (may increase absorption)
  • Children (use only if prescribed)
