Composition
Olbas for Children is a mixture of essential plant oils. It typically contains:
- Eucalyptus oil
- Mint oil (partly dementholised)
- Cajuput oil
- Juniperberry oil
- Clove oil
- Levomenthol
- Methyl salicylate
These ingredients release vapours that help open blocked airways.
Use / Indication
- Relief of blocked nose (nasal congestion)
- Common cold and flu symptoms
- Catarrh (excess mucus)
- Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
- Sinus congestion
- Minor respiratory tract infections
It works by inhalation of vapours that help ease breathing and clear nasal passages.
Direction of Use
- Inhalation only (do NOT put into nose or mouth)
- Children 3 months to 2 years:
- 4 drops on a tissue placed near the baby (not touching)
- Or placed in room for inhalation
- Children 2 years and above:
- 8–12 drops on a tissue or in hot water (out of reach)
- Can be used during day or night as needed
- Always keep out of child’s reach
Side Effects
- Mild irritation of nose or throat (if sensitive)
- Eye irritation if accidentally exposed
- Skin irritation if direct contact occurs
- Rare allergic reactions (rash, sneezing, discomfort)
Warning
- Do not put drops directly into nose or mouth
- Not suitable for babies under 3 months
- Avoid contact with eyes (can cause strong burning)
- Do not allow prolonged skin contact
- Keep tightly closed and away from children
- Stop use if irritation or allergy occurs
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions
- Safe alongside:
- Paracetamol / ibuprofen (cold/fever medicines)
- Antihistamines
- Saline nasal drops
- Avoid mixing with other strong menthol/essential oil products at same time (can irritate airways)
Caution
- Always supervise use in children
- Do not overuse (strong vapours may irritate sensitive noses)
- Avoid in children with severe asthma unless advised by a doctor
- Ensure proper ventilation when used in hot water method
- If symptoms persist beyond a few days, underlying infection/allergy should be checked
