Composition

  • Carbocisteine 5%
    (Equivalent to 5 g carbocisteine per 100 mL; usually 250 mg/5 mL) (vidal.fr)

Use / Indications

Used for:

  • Productive cough with thick mucus
  • Bronchitis
  • Respiratory tract congestion
  • Conditions with excessive or sticky airway secretions
  • Acute respiratory infections with mucus buildup (vidal.fr)

 

Mechanism of Action

Carbocisteine reduces the viscosity (thickness) of mucus, making sputum easier to cough out and improving airway clearance.

Direction of Use

Typical adult dosage:

  • Usually 15 mL three times daily initially
  • Dose may later be reduced as symptoms improve

Instructions:

  • Shake bottle before use
  • Use measuring cup/spoon
  • Preferably take after meals if stomach upset occurs
  • Drink plenty of fluids to help mucus clearance
  • Do not use longer than recommended without medical advice (vidal.fr)

Serious Side Effects

Seek medical attention if patient develops:

  • Skin blistering or peeling

  • Severe rash/swelling

 

Warnings

Do NOT use in:

  • Allergy to carbocisteine
  • Active stomach ulcer disease
  • Children below recommended age for adult formulation

Important warnings:

  • Mucolytics may worsen airway obstruction in some patients unable to clear mucus properly
  • Use cautiously in patients with asthma
  • Persistent cough should be medically evaluated

 

Drug Interactions

Use cautiously with:

  • Antitussives/cough suppressants (e.g., codeine, dextromethorphan) because mucus retention may occur
  • Other medicines causing stomach irritation

 

Cautions

  • Maintain adequate hydration
  • Use cautiously in:
    • Elderly patients
    • Asthma patients
    • History of peptic ulcer disease
  • Stop use if rash or allergic reaction occurs
  • Avoid combining with strong cough suppressants unless prescribed
