Composition

  • Active ingredient: Oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.05% w/v
    • Class: Topical nasal decongestant (alpha-adrenergic agonist)
  • Other ingredients may include:
    • Aloe vera extract (soothing/moisturizing)
    • Menthol
    • Cineole (eucalyptus component)
    • Sorbitol
    • Benzalkonium chloride (preservative)
    • Sodium citrate
    • Citric acid
    • Purified water

 

Indication / Use

Used for temporary relief of:

  • Blocked nose / nasal congestion
  • Common cold
  • Rhinitis (including allergic rhinitis)
  • Sinus congestion/sinusitis

Works by shrinking swollen blood vessels in the nose, helping you breathe more easily. Effects usually start within minutes and may last up to 8–12 hours.


 

Direction of Use

For adults and children 12 years and older:

  • 1–2 sprays in each nostril
  • Maximum:
    • 2–3 times daily
  • For nasal use only

Important:

  • Do NOT use continuously for more than 5–7 days without medical advice.

 

Side Effects

Common

  • Nasal dryness
  • Burning or stinging in the nose
  • Sneezing
  • Dry throat
  • Headache
  • Temporary irritation

Less common

  • Fast heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Nervousness
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)

Rare but serious

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Rebound congestion (nose becomes more blocked after overuse)

 

Warnings

Do NOT use if you:

  • Are allergic to oxymetazoline
  • Have:
    • Narrow-angle glaucoma
    • Certain heart diseases
    • Recent pituitary/nasal surgery
  • Are taking MAOI antidepressants (or used them within the last 14 days)

Use cautiously in:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Heart disease

 

Interactions

May interact with:

  • MAOI antidepressants
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Other decongestants/stimulants
  • Blood pressure medicines

 

Caution

Major caution:

  • Overuse can cause rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa), where the nose becomes dependent on the spray and congestion worsens after stopping.

Additional cautions:

  • Avoid prolonged daily use
  • If symptoms last more than a few days, underlying causes may include:
    • Allergies
    • Sinus infection
    • Deviated septum
  • May worsen glaucoma risk in susceptible individuals (important because you previously listed glaucoma eye drops).
